How God Does Spring in Connecticut

He starts off slow, that's for sure. Oh, there might be some 65 degree days in February, and you might see a forsythia starting to bloom, but then He decides to remind you it's winter right until the last day of March.

And then, just in case you were getting overconfident, He gives you sno-cone trees instead of popcorn trees.

April 2nd

But it's April, so snow like that is short-lived. So He opens up His celestial version of MS Paint and chooses the airbrush to start greenifying the land.

Oops. Must have right-clicked to get the white spray paint instead of the green. April 6th is Mormon Christmas, after all.

After a few false starts and ctrl-z's, we're back to ground one. Gray and brown branches, with a few green stragglers that survived the winter.

April 13 -- He's started a slight green misting of the branches in back!

Occasionally, instead of the airbrush He might try out the oil brush or marker to get some speckled dots on the ground.

He starts experimenting with other colors like pink.

April 28. This might look like slightly pink snow, but it's not.
And then, He stops his halfhearted measures with the airbrush altogether and decides it's time to bring all the colors back!

May 2. Okay, so He still takes His time when it comes to most trees.

Almost overnight, things have gone from this:
April 28
to this:
May 2
where now every branch has at least some green on it.

May 8
And again, in a matter of days, God adds another coating of green on to go from this:

May 2
to this:
May 8
His wall of green is ever inching upward.
May 9

May 9
And best of all, He's figured out how to click on the "Edit colors" button to see how many different kinds of pink He can make.

For some reason, He keeps a spray bottle handy, so it rains all the time. But when He puts it away, the sunshine makes for some glorious days.

And, for that matter, when He tries His hand at making the sky just as green as the leaves, the eerie post-tornado glow makes for some spectacular custom-colored pink sunsets too.

Yep, God is pretty good at MS Paint here in Connecticut.

May 21. Beats the April 2 view any day

In a sense, it's almost a relief when all of the pinks and white blossoms fall off, looking like new snow on the sidewalks. There's no more reason to run around trying to catch every single blossoming tree.

Instead, we can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the world of green God made.

It was worth the wait.

The Morning After Harry Potter 7.2

Warning: If you want to see the movie, don't read this. So, I kind of feel like the only person in my news feed on Facebook who doesn't have some synonym of the word "awesome" followed by several hundred exclamation points to describe the Harry Potter movie. And I feel like a cynical, horrible person for this. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. The first 100 minutes of it, at least. But then . . . I don't know. Was I expecting the illustrated version of Harry Potter and that's why I'm disappointed? Well, maybe. It's just such an epic ending. Full of Christian themes and triumphant battles even after they thought Harry was dead and gripping conversations between Voldemort and Harry. Whereas this, well . . . HARRY: I'm at King's Cross. But it's clean. DUMBLEDORE: Oh, that's nice. Well, I've got to go now. HARRY: Wait! So Snape's patronus was a doe? So was my mother's! Isn't that a bit . . . odd to you? ...

Ski Day

Everyone knows that sisters argue about wearing each other's clothes, but I hadn't realized I would have similar arguments with my preteen son. We were trying to get out the door to go skiing today, but first we had to make sure we had ski gear that fit. Last year, I had cobbled together an assortment of boots, skis, and poles from DI for cheap, but this year, since he had supposedly outgrown them, I had shelled out the big bucks at the local ski swap to acquire used boots, skis, and poles of similar quality to the DI ones (the boots had duct tape on them). Since we didn't have any gear that fit me, I asked my sister if I could borrow hers for the day. She gladly obliged, and I drove the 5 minutes to her house to get them. Unfortunately, the boots seemed a little small for me. She reassured me that she could get them on, and as I warbled "Sing, Sweet Nightingale," she tried with all her might to squeeze my foot in.  Unfortunately, I was the ugly stepsister who nee...
