Winter has been a bit of a bust this year, and it's little wonder that coats and snow pants are $5 at Walmart now. A few days ago, I saw snow in the forecast, so I scheduled a ski lesson for Child #2 since he's been asking forever for it.
As it turned out, there was no new snow (I probably jinxed it . . . should have washed my car instead) but we went anyway. After a few rounds on the bunny slope, my confidence was at an all-time high, so Child #1 and I went on the ski lift. As we were going up he let me know that Long Mozy was closed so we only had intermediate and advanced options. I had never done anything intermediate before, but I figured I would be fine, especially when I got off the ski lift so gracefully.
I soon found out that the snow on the super steep slope was either icy or like frozen croutons, neither of which made it easy for me to figure out switchbacks or a slow enough pizza stance. At one point, I had to basically sled down. It was probably not good for my snow pants, but maybe I can get new ones for $5 from Walmart. I took a picture of the track my pants made and thought of Jesus and footprints and beaches. That was the part where He dragged me down the mountain.
Eventually, I tried some real skiing again and felt very relieved to be off the mountain. But then I saw I had a half hour before Child #2's lesson would be done. Surely it would be easier the second time!
It was not. I cannot ski on steep slopes that are like ice rinks covered in Dippin Dots. I did the slowest pizza of my life, which went well til my ski pole landed in someone's old footprint (mine probably) and I tripped. A guy gave me tips for how to do switchbacks, which worked 4 times, and then both my skis fell off and a pole went flying. When I was almost to the bottom going a comfortable 4 mph, Joseph flew by going about 40. (In the time it took me to go down once he went 3 times, throwing some jumps in too).
As for Child #2 . . . He's a natural! And he loved it! So I guess it was all worth it.
